Determinants of Family Functioning among Custodial Grandparents

Abstract
To find out the main determinants affecting the family functioning among grandparent-headed home, this study analyzed the relations socio-demographical factor, health related factor, grandchildren related factor, and psycho-social factors(social support and parenting stress) with family functioning(family adaptability, family cohesion). The research participants were custodial grandparents who had lived with their grandchildren for over 6 months and had primary responsibility for their grandchildren. Through the intentional sampling, 221 custodial grandparents were sampled, and social workers conducted the survey with the structured questionnaire. The data of 217 questionnaires were finally analyzed using descriptive analysis, T-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression. The major results of the research were as follows: First, family functioning according to the general characteristics of research respondents showed a meaningful
difference in family adaptability of education level. Second, according to the subjective health condition, meaningful differences was shown in family adaptability and general family functioning. Third, according to the type of grandchildren, there were meaning differences in family adaptability and general family functioning, and according to the care period, there were also meaningful differences in family adaptability, family cohesion, and general family functioning. Fourth, According to the level of social support and care stress perceived by respondents, there were meaningful differences in family adaptability, family cohesion, and general family functioning. Next, in the regression of variants affecting the respondents¡¯ family functioning, the educational level of grandparent, and the level of ADL, IADL, and social support affected meaningfully in family adaptability. The level of grandparent¡¯s education and social support affected meaningfully in family cohesion and general family function.
